Staffan Lindeberg at the Department of Medicine, Lund University, has been studying health effects of the original human diet for many years. In earlier studies his research team have noted a remarkable absence of cardiovascular disease and diabetes among the traditional population of Kitava, Trobriand Islands, Papua New Guinea, where modern agrarian-based food is unavailable.

"If you want to prevent or treat diabetes type 2, it may be more efficient to avoid some of our modern foods than to count calories or carbohydrate," says Staffan Lindeberg.

This is the first controlled study of a Paleolithic diet in humans.

The article states that "it is rather unbelievable" that Nigeria has the lowest rate of depression...

I don't think it's unbelievable - as I have seen numerous reports that quantify the low rates of depression in developing countries.  Could it actually be that kinship means more than money? ... well i'll be damned  ::)

It is rather unbelievable as recent study reported that Nigerians has the lowest rate of global depression, with 0.8 per cent among a survey group of 14 countries.
Still ranking, is America with a whopping 18.2 per cent!!!

An Australian psychiatrist has accused the medical profession of over-diagnosing depression, and says thousands of people are wrongly being prescribed drugs to treat it.  According to Professor Gordon Parker of the University of New South Wales, the current threshold for what is considered to be "clinical depression" is too low and he warns that the condition is becoming less credible.

I think he makes an interesting point about the "exaggerated marketing claims" of drug companies being a contributing factor towards the escalating diagnosis of depression.  And I do feel that mass-marketing is always ready to cash in on something, no matter how pitiful.  Mass marketing is all about the art of lieing.... but I digress...

I think Modern society is not only a cause, but also a symptom of depression.  Consider this fact; Nigerians have the lowest rate of global depression.

I'm very interested in how we can get through this unnatural modern environment without going completely mad, so here is my little list that helps me to keep the blues away;

  • Exercising
  • Being around warm people
  • Hobbies
  • Hot Chilli Thai food

Health and fitness group starts
A new non-profit health and fitness group has started in Umina.

The Caveman Power group, formed by Umina resident Mr Matt Emery, has been operating for six months and already has 20 members.
Mr Emery said the group's main aim was to assist with health issues such as mental health, emotional health and physical health.
"We are specifically focused on fighting modern diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, anxiety and depression," Mr Emery said.
"We do this by means of bushwalks, mountain bike rides and other means.
"We offer free diet and nutrition tips and free fitness programs."
Mr Emery said the group also did charity walks with money raised used to help fight the diseases.
Mr Emery said the group's broader philosophy was "finding contentment by being true to our biology".
"Modern society is causing a lot of modern diseases," Mr Emery said.
"We take the perspective as if we were cavemen transported into modern times.
"We intend to combine the best of modern science with the best of primal wisdom.
"At the end of the day we are all about having fun and getting healthy."
Mr Emery said the group was targeting those who were inexperienced or new to fitness, people with permanent incapacities and injuries, people stressed by modern day society and people who feel they "don't fit in or are marginalized".
He said the group also had a lot to offer the experienced health fanatic.
He said most interest was coming from women, especially in the 30 and over age bracket.
Mr Emery said all interest received from men was spread across all age brackets.
He said the website,, had become "incredibly popular".
"We have lots of interest, about 50 per cent, from the USA," Mr Emery said.
The site offers free advice as well as a free newsletter.
"As far as I'm aware this is the first group of its kind. It's unique."
He said the group was making efforts for people to start groups "around the world".
Mr Emery said he was currently working on a "Modern Caveman" book.

My favourite website of all time is this one.

Every Sunday they post new secrets, all the secrets are anonymous, and the best ones are displayed in a Museum in New York.  They also sell a book, from which all the funds get donated to charities that support depression and suicide.

It is the most poignant "as real as it gets" website I have ever seen.  Check it out...

It's not looking good according to the WHO (World Health Organisation)...

"Depression is the leading cause of disability, and the 4th leading contributor to the global burden of disease in 2000. By the year 2020, depression is projected to reach 2nd place for all ages, both sexes. Today, depression is already 2nd in the age category 15-44 years for both sexes combined."

Quick facts from the WHO;
  • Depression is common, affecting about 121 million people worldwide.
  • Depression is among the leading causes of disability worldwide.

...and I am not surprised
By now you're probably aware of my feelings towards modern society, therefore i'll skip the rant about how society is making us sick... BUT, the above figures do prove a point; that modern society is an unnatural environment and is not conducive to overall contentment.

So what's the problem?
I'm not 100% certain... but I do suspect that consumerism is deteriorating the fabric of society.  And mass marketing is constantly telling us to buy more, get more, eat more, be more, etc.

Mass marketing is becoming increasingly clever and deviously surreptitious in it's execution.  I think mass marketing is an evil form of psychotherapy, constantly trying to get into our subconscious.  Try and go one day without running into mass marketing - it's not easy.

The vicious cycle
Here is the formula of modern society;
  • Work 40 hours a week, and become time poor.
  • Being time poor we have to buy ready made food, which is expensive.
  • Being time poor we become stressed, we need to buy a holiday.
  • Now there is less money so we have to work more.

Repeat the above steps and add more working hours (and stress) for each cycle.  And for each cycle, you get a step closer to depression.

Obviously my example is a very generalised one.  But the principle of "work more for less" stands true.  I feel great sadness when I see people filling their shopping carts with overpriced processed foods - it saddens me because I know that some corporation has just cashed in on the sweat of their hard work.  Not to mention the fact that the processed food is very likely to be unhealthy.

I realise that the consumer is responsible for their choices, but I can't get away from feeling that somehow, even though there are 1000's of products to choose from, there really is little choice, if any.

Time to fight back
If you're are reading this article then you're already taking affirmative action, because you're seeking.... don't stop seeking, learn the truth!  Get informed and fight back!!!

Kellogg's is misleading the Australian public. They are keeping people unhealthy, and why not, they're making a tonne of money...

Did you know?
  • Kellogg's Nutri Grain is 31% sugar.
  • Kellogg's Just Right is 31% sugar.
  • Kellogg's Sultana Bran is 23% sugar.
  • Kellogg's Special K is 15% sugar.
  • Kellogg's All Bran is 14% sugar.

Now check out their incredibly biased food pyramid;
  • Grain and grain based foods 4 - 6 or more servings per day
  • The Vegetable Group - 5 servings per day
  • Meat  - 1 or 2 servings per day

Seeing a pattern yet?  Read on...

Kellogg's make the following statements;
"A high fibre, high-carbohydrate breakfast helps you feel fuller for longer which may lead to less mid-morning snacking."
"High Carbohydrate intakes: Help provide energy for metabolism and activity, Are important for weight control, Help achieve low fat intakes."

Kellogg's is trying to trick you (and your children);
High carbohydrate foods create a spike in insulin, the net effect is that you crave more food sooner.  High Carbohydrate foods are NOT a good choice for weight loss, and they help achieve low-fat intakes by satisfying you with sugar, instead of fat - which promotes weight gain!

If you know much about nutrition, you'll understand the horror I feel about the major food corporations, and how they are carefully misleading the citizens... they are literally playing with your life!  With mass marketing as their means of attack, they are successfully keeping many Australians unfit - and as a result they are strongly encouraging the rise in Diabetes, Obesity, Heart Disease and other conditions.

What does this mean for you? And what can you do?
Get informed!!!  Read the nutrition tables on the back of the packaging, and LEARN about what you are eating.  Do NOT trust the word of the food corporations, because they are interested in money, not health.

Empower yourself, make the change NOW and take back your life.  It's a free country and you can eat whatever you want, but at least KNOW what you're eating - without being conned by corporations that couldn't give a rat's about you and your health.


Food & Diet / Don't be fooled by the Low-Fat hype!

I see it all the time; people choosing food packages that proudly declare "95% Fat Free", so let me say this just once...

LOW FAT (usually) = HIGH SUGAR

Next time you are choosing anything that's labelled "Low Fat", make sure you check out the ingredients and/or the nutrition table on the packaging for signs of high sugar (simple carbohydrate) content.  The food corporations have been using this trick for a while, and let's face it; do you seriously think the food corporations exist to make you healthy?  They are corporations, and they exist for one reason only; to make money.

Food that has plenty of fat is good for you - as long as it is the right type of fat (or the right ratio).  Omega-3 fats are excellent, and remember this;

Your body can't make these fats so you have to get them from your diet.

The Low Fat craze that begun in the 1990's has lowered the consumption of saturated fats in our diet which is good.  BUT, we are now consuming enormous amounts of carbohydrates, whilst avoiding all the essential fats that we need in order to be healthy (omega-3 and omega-6 fats are called essential because we have to get them from food).

Please note, both wheat and sugar are metabolised as glucose, and they induce an insulin spike.  Complex Carbohydrates (wheat, bread, pasta etc) are slow release (low GI) but they need insulin in order to regulate glycogen metabolism.  Complex Carbohydrates are only slightly different to Simple Carbohydrates (sugar), and it would not be inaccurate to call a slice of bread; "a slice of sugar".

Primal man did not eat wheat.  This is a fact, grains have only been around for human consumption for 12,000 years.  Modern agriculture started at that time and is referred to as the Neolithic Revolution.  Before then, humans survived on mother nature's finest; plants, game meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds, berries, roots and tubahs, etc.

Wheat was introduced (12,000 years ago) for the sake of economics, it was easy to grow and could easily be stored incase of famine or drought.  So it made sense for primal man to horde large amounts of grain.  However, they paid a price, that is; they got high calories in return for low nutrition.  Not only that, tribes became less nomadic and started to build walls around their wheat crops - and next came the first large scale wars.  The tribes that held the wheat were attacked for their bounty.

This was also the time that certain animals were domesticated; cows, bulls, mules etc.  Animal domestication along with Agriculture set the stage for modern civilisation.  And although it originally started in the Middle East, it spread quickly, particularly along favourable parts of the equator where conditions were good for crop growing.  And we can still see the effects of this today when we look at the haves and have-nots.  I'll talk more about that later...

In modern times we have a fixation with low-calorie food.  But, in the days of Primal Man, calories were valuable, because they were hard to come by.  Try living in the bush for a week and you'll know what i'm talking about!  It's important to understand that favouring low-calorie food is an unnatural phenomena and is relatively new to the lifestyle of humans.  Low Fat food is also new to us, and so is high carbohydrate food.

Examples of "Low Fat" trickery;
  • Yoghurt
  • Breakfast Cereal
  • Muesli Bars
  • Milk Drinks
  • Lollies! (obvious one, but you'd be surprised... people do fall for it)

One of my goals with Caveman Power is to challenge the myths that have been keeping society sick for so long, and food is a major area.

Advice Column / How do you prevent or deal with stress?

I deal with stress in a few different ways, here's my short list;

Intense Exercise
This helps me to release pent up energy, because I can be aggressive without introducing conflict into my life (i.e. more stress).  I understand that conflict is sometimes necessary, but there are times when it's not an option.

Bush walk, alone.
The bush always accepts me unconditionally, and provides the perfect environment for getting some clarity.  Simply being away from the noise and demands of society can produce amazing insights.  I can truly be myself in the bush, without judgement from anyone.

Don't internalise too much
I tend to keep things to myself, lest I be seen as weak or vulnerable.  Excessive internalising leads me to feel clamped up, and eventually, robotic.  I need to emote, it's not an option, it's a need. However, allowing myself to emote is difficult, and I struggle to do it.  When I need to emote I either walk into the bush and let my body emote as it needs to, and/or I share the problem with a friend (thank goodness for friends).

Tell the truth
I'm a good liar if I want to be, it's a survival skill I picked up when I was young.  However, it rots away my self respect and I end up feeling stressed, AND it causes severe anxiety.  The only way to avoid this, is simply not to tell lies.

I'm sure there's many more ways to prevent, or deal with stress.  What are your tips?

The Voting Booth / Astrology - a question of faith, not science.

I get quite frustrated when somebody asks what star sign I am... and immediately I feel as if I am dealing with an idiot.  Sorry to all those that believe in Astrology, but really; stop trying to pigeon-hole me into your 12 little categories.

Astrology is a multi-million dollar industry, cashing in on gullible people, and I thoroughly believe it has a negative impact on our civilisations, socially and personally.

I realise some people read their stars for fun, and not all followers are fanatical.  But still; if they're reading their stars just for fun, wouldn't the joke wear out rather quickly?

It's my assertion that Astrology is just another 'comfort blanket' that has been designed to make us feel comfortable in this amazingly unpredictable world.  There is no evidence supporting it's validity.  And each time you let Astrology influence your decision making, you are abandoning your natural instinct of reasoning - which could be defined as simply; being stupid.

The Voting Booth / Sleep - how much do you need?

I tend to perform at my peak after a good 8 to 9 hours sleep.  Anything less than 6 hours sleep and I feel weak, anxious, and delirious.  But I know of some people that operate well with only 5 or 6 hours sleep, I wonder why?

Additionally, a major complication is the fact that our 'Circadian Rhythms' are distorted due to artificial lighting and our indoors lifestyle.  It is widely believed (and proven) that our brains release certain chemicals to induce sleep when there is little or no light filtering through our eyeballs - which supports the assertion that artificial lighting effects our sleep patterns.

So, how about you - how long do you typically sleep for?

Today I met a homeless man.... he approached me whilst I was on the main street and he asked for a dollar.  He also said that he just been bashed by somebody, which was apparent to me because of the dried blood I could see on his face.  He spoke with a very slight slur, he wore an old tracksuit, he was dirty - his very demeanour saddened me, and angered me.

He is the wretched.
He is the pathetic.
He is the walking dead.

...and I love him so much, that it hurts.

I guess for some people our modern society is like a ballroom, filled with exotic delights and trinkets, where dreams are realised.  For others; modern society is like a rusty cage, with cast iron shackles and chains, where life is a baffling nightmare.  I'm convinced that the wretched would at no disadvantage in a natural world, because mother nature cares not about money. did I give him a dollar?  Well, no.  I showed him how to hunt for cheap foods, and how to subsist with minimal resources.

What good is a dollar to the wretched...

Bones are typically thought of as calcified, inert structures, but researchers at Columbia University Medical Center have now identified a surprising and critically important novel function of the skeleton. They've shown for the first time that the skeleton is an endocrine organ that helps control our sugar metabolism and weight and, as such, is a major determinant of the development of type 2 diabetes.

Columbia University Medical Center:
The research, published in the August 10 issue of Cell, demonstrates that bone cells release a hormone called osteocalcin, which controls the regulation of blood sugar (glucose) and fat deposition through synergistic mechanisms previously not recognized. Usually, an increase in insulin secretion is accompanied by a decrease in insulin sensitivity. Osteocalcin, however, increases both the secretion and sensitivity of insulin, in addition to boosting the number of insulin-producing cells and reducing stores of fat.

In this published research, authors show that an increase in osteocalcin activity prevents the development of type 2 diabetes and obesity in mice. This discovery potentially opens the door for novel therapeutic avenues for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes.

This is an amazing discovery!  I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes, particularly in the area of Diabetes treatment. Specifically; the production of insulin-producing beta cells, which is considered one of the best, but currently unattainable, strategies to treat diabetes.

The prevention of Diabetes is another topic all together.... i'll expand on that later.

Caveman Power is accessible to the world, but a bit local coverage is pretty cool too.  I have big plans for the future of Caveman Power, which I won't go into just now, but rest assured it's going to pretty exciting around here...

Okay, i'm fed up with all the misinformation I keep hearing about exercising to lose weight.  So i'm just going to say it plain and simple;

"You do NOT need to spend hours at the gym to lose weight"
Running on a treadmill for 30 minutes non-stop, followed by isolating certain muscles with weights or machines is a big fat waste of time!

Now that i've said that. Here it is, the best way to lose weight and get fit;

Short bursts of intensity with small rests in between each exercise, for no longer then 20-30 minutes in total.

I can tell you this with total confidence, because I have practised these methods on myself (and others) with complete success.  I have also sourced numerous scientific papers to substantiate my statements (for those that like physiological evidence).

I have lost 18 kilos using these methods (assisted with diet), and I have witnessed a weight loss of up to 14 kilos in others in less than 12 weeks.  And the good part is, we're not just getting slimmer, we're getting fitter - much fitter.

You can speed up this process by using the Caveman Power Diet (more on that topic later...) but even without dieting you will still lose weight and get fitter.

I'm completely frustrated by seeing people slogging it out in the gym and never getting the results they want, and it's not their fault...  they're just following the same old crap every one else has been told.

'Foxy' sourced an article that outlines in detail the benefits of High Intensity Intermittent Training - which is nearly identical to the Caveman Power Workout principles.

We know this stuff works because we see it working for all types of people in real life, however, it's nice to see the science behind it.

Philosophy / Are you true to your biology?

The theory:
Modern society functions (in many ways) in direct opposition to our human biological make-up.  And I suspect that to be the reason why men and women are being sociologically redefined in ways that leaves us somewhat... baffled.

Additionally; gender roles are becoming increasingly unclear and relationships more complicated, due to the afore mentioned incongruencies.

We live in a society where women are at a biological advantage, they are excellent gatherers (shoppers) and nurturers (human relationships).  Hence, they excel in modern society and ultimately inherit more responsibilities.

On the other hand... the biological competencies of males are required less frequently.  No longer is it a survival imperative for males to hunt bears and protect a tribe from wild animals -  and those skills are diminishing exponentially due to our sociological ecosystem.

Clearly, this is a problem - and it's not getting any better.

How do we fix it?
We acknowledge our biological make-up.... which ironically, is extremely difficult to accomplish, considering the socialisation we all encounter whilst growing up - but there is a way.  If we look at wild birds, or bears in the woods, or even fish in a river, we can see that they are being true to their biology.  They act in accordance to their physiological design.  Do humans act in accordance to their physiological design?  I think not.

Meditate on this for a while and you'll begin to get some stunning insights about yourself.

Fitness & Exercise / Heinlein's philosophy
